Ethnic Enable’s mission is to improve the quality of life for minority ethnic (ME) disabled people and carers in Glasgow and the surrounding localities through enhancing accessibility to facilities and services, promoting integration and inclusion into communities and wider society and facilitating the realisation of personal potentials.

Background Information- Disability & Ethnicity

  1. If you are disabled and come from a minority ethnic background you are more likely to live in or on the poverty line in comparison to white counterparts
  2. If you are disabled and come from a minority ethnic background you are more likely to live in over-crowded, poor quality, inadequate housing
  3. If you are disabled and from the ME (minority ethnic) community you are more likely to be cared for by an informal carer (family)
  4. If you are disabled and from the ME community you are more likely to not be in receipt of eligible benefits
  5. If you are disabled and from the ME community you are more likely to be cut-off from you peers and ethnic community
  6. ME communities perceive disability as being a curse and something to be ashamed of- therefore parents/carers of disabled children are more likely to hide their disability
  7. If you are disabled and from the ME community you will have less access to your own local community ‘hotspots’ such as mosques, temples, community centres due to lack of accessibility and a understanding of the needs of an individual with disability.
  8. Carers of children with a disability are more likely to be a single parent
  9. Individuals with disability from the ME community are more vulnerable to being affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse
